Terms for photographers

These terms apply to photographers invited to show and sell their work on Unaltered. They're written to be read, so please read them. When you tick 'I agree' on the upload page, they become an agreement between you and us.

Draft · for Dylan to check Version 2026-10-12.2

1. Who we are

Unaltered (unaltered.photography) is run by Dylan Jones in England. In these terms "we" and "us" means Unaltered, and "you" means the photographer.

You must be 18 or over. You're an independent photographer, not our employee or business partner.

2. Your photographs stay yours

You keep the copyright in every photograph you upload.

You give us a non-exclusive licence, for as long as a photograph is on the site, to: show it anywhere on the site, including the home page, featured selections, collections and other photographers' pages as well as your own; use it to promote the site (for example on social media, in newsletters and emails, in the press and in advertising for the site), always credited to you; sell prints and digital downloads of it; and make the copies needed to do that, such as web-sized copies and print files.

If you take a photograph down, we'll stop using it in anything new. Posts and printed material already published before then don't have to be withdrawn.

People who buy a digital download get a licence for personal use only: no commercial use, no resale and no use for training AI.

3. The Unaltered standard

Every photograph must be a single exposure that you took. Nothing may be generated or filled in by AI, nothing composited from more than one frame, and nothing added or removed from the scene.

Editing is limited to what a darkroom could do: exposure, contrast, white balance, cropping, straightening, black-and-white conversion and removing sensor dust.

You confirm this for each photograph when you upload it, and we keep a record of that confirmation. We may ask to see the original camera file, and we may remove any photograph we believe doesn't meet the standard.

4. What you promise

That you took the photograph and own the rights in it; that showing and selling it won't infringe anyone else's rights; that you have any permission needed from people who can be identified in it, or from the owners of private places, for it to be sold as a print; and that it isn't unlawful or hateful.

If a claim is made against us because one of these promises wasn't true, you agree to cover our reasonable costs of dealing with it.

5. What goes on the site

Your photographs go on the site as soon as you upload them, in collections that are yours: you name them and choose which photographs go in each. No one else can add to your collections, and you can't add to anyone else's.

We don't check every photograph before it appears. Each upload is screened automatically, and visitors can report a photograph. Either may hold a photograph back from the site until we've looked at it.

We choose which photographs are featured, including on the home page. We can edit titles and notes for accuracy or to fix mistakes, and we can hold back or remove any photograph that we believe breaks these terms or that we don't think is right for the site. We'll tell you if we do.

We set the prices. Signed limited editions (the As Shot Edition) are only offered by separate agreement with you.

6. Your share

For every sale of one of your photographs you get 50% of the net amount.

For a print, the net amount is the price the buyer paid for the print, less any VAT, less what the print lab charged us to print and pack it, less any postage not covered by the buyer's delivery charge, and less the card payment fee. The delivery charge the buyer pays goes on postage and isn't shared.

For a digital download, the net amount is the price less any VAT and less the card payment fee.

Example: a £25 download with a card fee of about 58p has a net amount of £24.42, so your share is £12.21.

Your sales and your share of each appear on the upload page when you sign in.

7. When you get paid

Your share for an order becomes due 30 days after the order is delivered (or, for a download, 30 days after it's bought). This allows for returns and refunds.

We pay once a month, by bank transfer, for everything that became due in the previous month, as long as at least £10 is due. Smaller amounts carry over to the next month.

If an order is refunded or disputed before we've paid you, there's no share for it. If it happens after we've paid you, we take it off your next payment.

We never ask for bank details on the site. When you first have money due, we'll arrange a secure way for you to give them to us, or to our payment provider (Stripe) directly.

You're responsible for declaring your earnings and paying any tax on them. We don't deduct tax. We'll send you a statement of your sales for any year if you ask.

8. Leaving

You can take down any photograph yourself, at any time, from the photographers' area, or end this agreement completely by telling us. If you ask us to take photographs down, we'll do it within 14 days. Orders already placed will still be completed, and your share of them paid.

We can end this agreement by telling you. We can also end it straight away, and remove your photographs, if you break the Unaltered standard or the promises in section 4.

9. Your information

We keep your name, email address, bio and a record of your uploads (including your confirmation for each photograph) to run the site, handle sales and pay you. Your name, bio and photographs appear publicly on your artist page. We don't share your email address with anyone else.

Bank details are held only by us for making payments, or by our payment provider, never on the website.

10. Changes to these terms

If we change these terms we'll tell you, and you'll be asked to accept the new version the next time you sign in. Changes never affect money you've already earned.

11. Law

These terms are governed by the law of England and Wales.
